Whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof (Gen. 2:19)

In ancient times it was believed that the name of a person or object contained the essential force of that person or object. To "name" something was tantamount to exercising mastery over it. (For this reason, the name of Israel's God—YHWH—was never spoken.)
