Take Off That Label!
Often we seem to conform unconsciously to traditions, mandates, or laws without questioning their validity or true intent.
For instance, one might consider those tags which are affixed to pillows and mattresses when we purchase them. They read, "Do Not Remove This Tag Under Penalty of Law." They then list the contents, manufacturer's name, and legal statute with which the item complies.
The tag is for the protection of the consumer—to assure him that the bedding is new and is made according to certain high standards. The purchaser is free to remove the tag as soon as he makes the purchase. It is the retailer who must not remove it. Yet one can go into homes years later and find these tags in abundance because the purchaser has been afraid "under penalty of law" to remove them!
