We Shall Meet Again

"Do you think there is life after death? Shall we meet again?" This question was put to me recently with such a wistful expression of personal bereavement that it called forth a flood of hope and compassion. My thought leaped to the accounts that are so familiar to Bible students, of meetings which took place between a group of men and women and a beloved friend who they had good reason to believe had been dead for several days.

The beloved friend, of course, was Jesus. The disciples had seen him crucified, and his body had been placed in a tomb. Yet afterwards he appeared with them several times in human form, talking to them, teaching and comforting them in such a practical and intimate way that their hearts burned within them. His presence was so tangible at these times that although he finally departed from them in the flesh, the disciples' joy in the certainty of his eternally living individuality never left them. They did not grieve for him again or feel bereft.

These meetings between Christ Jesus and his disciples after his crucifixion and triumph over the grave prove for all time that what seems to be the death of the body of one we love is no final tragedy of separation and bereavement. Since then, Christians have acknowledged these touching events as encouragement to believe that we may all expect to meet our friends hereafter.
