Resolving Difficulties

In recent years my husband and I bought a lovely house in an all white neighborhood. The neighbors were friendly and most helpful. The summer of the first year we decided to have our furnace and central airconditioner serviced. The appointment was made, and the serviceman came out. He asked to see the lady of the house. I made it known that he was speaking with her.

He wanted to know if the owner was away, or if I was the housekeeper or maid. I assured him I was the one who had called for the service in my own home. He was astonished and commented that we had the most beautiful house in the area. He asked many personal questions such as what my husband did and whether I worked or not.

After being convinced that we truly were the owners of the property, he became angry. He did not feel we should have a home in the neighborhood. He refused to do the servicing on the premises and departed, very bitter and hostile.
