Spiritual Rest
Christian Science reveals the existence of a higher and more effective form of rest than mere physical inactivity or sleep.
This is not to say that students of this Science do not rest and sleep like other mortals. They certainly do, according to their need. But they are learning a little of the practical value of spiritual rest, and are applying this understanding in situations where more than ordinary endurance is needed.
Most people are awake and active at least two thirds of the time, and the hectic pace of modern living leaves many limp and worn out at the end of the day. This calls for much more than the crutch supposedly provided by alcohol, tobacco, or tranquilizers. What is needed is an understanding of the spiritual source of strength and renewal that some of the great Bible characters understood and utilized. These seers were so vividly conscious of the power and presence of God, and so sure of His sustaining love, that they were literally able to rest in action, carrying out their demanding duties with unflagging vitality and zeal.
