Through the understanding of spiritual law as taught in Christian Science...
Through the understanding of spiritual law as taught in Christian Science, many blessings have come into my experience. Some of my healings have been instantaneous; others have taken time to accomplish. But from each trial I have learned valuable lessons, which have helped solve later problems.
In 1926, after having been told by an eminent physician that there was no known medical cure for the tobacco habit, I decided to take the advice of a relative and ask for help from a Christian Science practitioner. Treatment was given, but the healing did not come quickly. In fact, it was several years before my complete liberation from cigarette smoking was accomplished. However, in the interim I had many other demonstrations of the power of this wonderful religion. With the aid of a practitioner I experienced healings of colds and a sprained wrist. Supply came in place of lack, and problems involving human relationships were solved.
From time to time during this period I asked a practitioner for specific prayerful help in support of my continuing desire to overcome the smoking habit, but I did not have continuous treatment. Finally it became clear to me that I needed to increase my own understanding of Christian Science. I needed to "study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit," as Mrs. Eddy admonishes us on page 495 in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Also I began to realize more clearly the import of these words from the textbook: "But the human self must be evangelized" (ibid., p. 254).
