A Child's Heritage

Remarks about heredity inevitably seem to attend the birth of a child. We have all heard, and probably made, such casual comments as, "Congratulations on the son and heir!" or "The daughter is the picture of her mother." Parents experience delight or disappointment in looking for human characteristics to be reproduced in their little ones.

But great joy can come to parents, and much profit to the baby, if we exchange the mortal, untrue concept of human heredity for the facts of a child's spiritual, harmonious heritage as revealed by Christian Science.

In this family context, an heir may be defined as one who receives or is entitled to receive an endowment or quality from a parent. When properly evaluating every child's true heritage, one needs to acknowledge the true Parent or author of the child's being. When God, Spirit, is seen as the one and only cause and creator, and the nature of God is in some measure understood, we may see His offspring, man, in a new light. Understanding man's spiritual selfhood, and teaching our children its truths, can help to bring about remarkable improvement in human character and capabilities.
