Five years ago while I was working on a special assignment in Australia as a representative of an American Company, I had what was to me a wonderful physical healing, demonstrating the power of Christian Science treatment. I had been bothered for several months by the symptoms of hay fever. During this period I worked prayerfully for myself to realize that there was no harmful atmosphere, that my life breath came from God, the source of all life.
Before I left the United States on this trip, I had done much prayerful work to realize my inseparability from God's love and to know that Love was present where I was, and that I need not feel separated from the love of my wife and family, who would be many miles away. This work helped me feel that God's goodness was right at hand and strengthened my prayer for relief from the hay fever. In this way I was for a time able to gain a great deal of freedom from its effects.
However, the case developed into a form of suffocation, making it very difficult to breathe, although the nasal passages were clear. It settled into a lung condition. After two weeks of very acute breathing difficulties, in which I began to have a strong fear that I might die, I called for treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. She pointed out that I live because God is my Life, and she referred me to a statement by Mary Baker Eddy in The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, the last portion of which seemed especially applicable to my need (p. 195): "Christian Science is at length learned to be no miserable piece of ideal legerdemain, by which we poor mortals expect to live and die, but a deep-drawn breath fresh from God, by whom and in whom man lives, moves, and has deathless being."
