Praying for Good Government

If one feels critical or frustrated about how his local or national government is being run and wishes to do something about it, he could begin by making sure that he himself is performing well in the realm of self-government. After all, a municipality or a nation is just a group of people, and unless individuals in this group learn to express wisdom, unselfishness, and self-discipline in their own thoughts and acts, community or national affairs hardly can be harmonious and progressive.

For over one hundred years Christian Science has proved the practicality of individual righteousness in solving human problems. It reveals that the source of this goodness is God, infinite living good, and that the real identity of man reflects the divine Mind in substance, life, and intelligence. As one glimpses these spiritual facts, he begins to understand the real basis for righteous self-government in human affairs and its possible extension into a wider context. Mary Baker Eddy writes in Pulpit and Press: "You have simply to preserve a scientific, positive sense of unity with your divine source, and daily demonstrate this. Then you will find that one is as important a factor as duodecillions in being and doing right, and thus demonstrating deific Principle." Pul.,p.4;

No one, then, need feel helpless or insignificant in the face of governmental problems. Christian Science teaches him that regardless of its seeming size or complexity, mortal existence is really a false mental state, a dream picture, which can be corrected and harmonized in proportion as human thought is purified and educated in the things of Spirit.
