In the midst of all the attention being given to the youth of America these days, let me slip in yet another observation: The time has come to say a word about how very religious college students are.... There is a kind of hunger for the holy on campus —now here, now there. It deserves to be mentioned....

Even as institutional religious forms and practices disintegrate, religious sensibilities seem to be appearing, almost in inverse proportion.... I perceive the presence of religious impulses in many an undergraduate. For one thing, the study of religion as an academic discipline seems to be in vogue.... [It has been] reported that at several large universities ... departments of religion are adding prestigious faculty by leaps and bounds. Enrollment in courses in religion continues to mushroom....
