Words cannot express my gratitude for Christian Science, and...
Words cannot express my gratitude for Christian Science, and for the many healings I have had. I would like to relate my first healing, which brought me into the study of Christian Science.
I was born and reared in a Protestant home. The Bible was our daily guide. We attended a Presbyterian church and Sunday School. My parents were blessed with a large family and also enough resources to care well for every one of us. When I was very young one of our nursemaids allowed me to drink fresh milk, unpasteurized. I became very ill. The doctor in charge of my care was of the opinion that I was suffering from undulant fever. The best specialists were called in for assistance, but were of no avail.
Time went on. This illness had affected my heart, circulation, liver, nervous system, skin condition. At middle age my body was scarred from surgery and reacted against taking any more medicine. I went to see a new specialist. He was an honest man. He informed me and my family that there was nothing to be done for me. I should stay quiet at home, and make the best of each day.
Now alone with God, on what was supposed to be my deathbed, I prayed: "Dear Lord, tell me, am I saved? I am not sure that I have not offended Thee. Please tell me!" Constantly I prayed to know the truth. Many days after that, at daybreak I was awakened from my sleep, and the thought came to me: "Sofia, you are not saved, you are only in a state of blind belief." My prayer was, "Dear Lord, please give me understanding." After that, I continued in prayer. Many days after, a friend came from the city to see me. In the course of her conversation she mentioned Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. This brought a special message to me, even though the woman was not herself studying Christian Science.
The following morning I went to the Christian Science Reading Room in search of the textbook, Science and Health. From there I was led to a Christian Science practitioner. She was experienced, and kind beyond words. She started to give me treatment. My healing was instantaneous. While reading the textbook for the first time, I realized the good tidings that Mrs. Eddy had discovered the promised Comforter (see John 14:16), and is the revelator of the Christ, Truth, to this age. No longer could I separate her from her books. Her mission was to interpret to us the teachings of the Master, Christ Jesus. I felt free for the first time in my life. I had been praying for the truth, and the truth had made me free! (See John 8:32.)
Nothing less than a life consecrated to the Cause of Christian Science would I consider good enough to express my gratitude for our Master, the Way-shower, for Mrs. Eddy, for Christian Science teachers and practitioners, and for each one who commits his life to the Cause of Christian Science.
