Lifting Up Our View of Christmas
There is a great need for a thorough reappraisal of the Christmas season. It deserves to be celebrated for what it really is, and not be turned into a frantic commercial carnival. Those who follow Jesus should try to gain a scientifically spiritual view of life and bring every event in their human experience into line with the deeper meaning of his mission.
Christmas celebrates the birth of the most significant human life known to history. The quiet scene at Bethlehem, centuries ago, marked the dawn of a new era for mankind. It was the fullest advent of the Christ in human affairs, the dawn of a higher and more demonstrable understanding of man's spiritual identity as the son of God.
Jesus' mission was to prove beyond doubt the existence of the Science of Life. By his mastery of material conditions he showed the reality of God's omnipotence and omnipresence, and man's real life in God as His perfect image or reflection. The Messiah's birth and subsequent teaching and healing work radically altered human thought. They accelerated humanity's march toward its final goal of spiritual freedom and harmony.
