Stopping the Trend Toward Crime

Most people don't steal. Nor do they carry a gun or a knife, with violence in mind. It is encouraging to remember that honest and decent behavior is far and away more prevalent than its opposite. One should remember this when he reads about the rising crime rate. It helps to hold the problem in proper perspective.

The foregoing remarks, of course, are not intended as an argument for complacency. Far from it. We need to stop and reverse the current crime trend, and we need to do it now. This will require wise legislation and firm action. It will mean that the poverty, ignorance, frustration, and injustice that breed crime must be dealt with head on, and decisive steps taken to right these wrongs.

As individuals, what can Christian Scientists do to speed up this urgently needed work? They are free to engage in political action and to contribute their money or their skills in any ways they consider wise and helpful. But more than this, they are equipped to give help in a far higher and more practical way. They have gained some understanding of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, all-knowing divine Mind, and have witnessed the practicality of this understanding in healing physical disease and solving other human problems.
