Before I knew anything about Christian Science, I thought I was born to suffer, as my life was filled with trouble and unhappiness. When I was eleven years old, I was bitten by a dog and taken to the hospital, where I remained for three years. The diagnosis was osteomyelitis, and I was seventeen before I could walk without crutches.
When I was a bride of five weeks, my husband came to the United States from Scotland, which was my home, and I joined him four months later. He had only been in this country two weeks when he was in a very serious accident. He was still in the hospital when I arrived in America. The Travelers' Aid Society took me to the apartment in which I was to live, and to the hospital to see my husband.
Four months later he was dismissed from the hospital, but he never fully recovered and became an alcoholic until his death fifteen years later.
