Women's Liberation Is Necessary

The recent resurgence of the Women's Liberation movement after decades of quiescence provides an opportunity for thought. Although few people today would oppose basic equality between the sexes, we read almost every day of women protesting against what they consider to be the inequities they face. What is the problem?

The problem seems to be that society still holds woman's intelligence and ability in low esteem. The Biblical traditions of God as a powerful masculine figure, and of woman as created from man, symbolize the secondary position of woman in history.

So universal are the attitudes underlying these traditions that we are seldom aware of them. But surely commonplace negative opinions of woman are no more justifiable than hatred of a different race. Is this not one more instance, along with war and racism, of confused thought on a world scale?
