I had the privilege of being raised by parents who were devoted students of Christian Science. I have had many opportunities to experience the healing effects and regenerative power of this Science.

A memorable healing occurred during my early youth. My parents, my grandmother, and I were taking a trip by automobile. In the course of the journey an autmomobile door was jammed shut on one of my hands. The door was closed so tightly that after considerable difficulty it had to be forcefully kicked open from the inside by my father.

My hand appeared to be completely crushed. Immediately it was extremely painful, and there was swelling, discoloration, and bleeding. Everyone present was frightened and upset by the sight of it, except my father. I wrapped my hand in a jacket because I could not bear the sight of it. My father, however, refused to accept the evidence of the material senses. He would not admit that an accident could happen to man. As Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 424), "Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection." He decided to continue the journey, despite the objections of the others who were present.
