Through many years I have had protection, guidance, and healing as a result of the teachings of Christian Science. My parents were not interested in my religion, but they left me free to rely on God for health.

As a child, I had had whooping cough. Mother used to speak about this, describing it in detail. I began thinking about this mental picture one night when suffering with severe pain in my back, hip, and leg. This condition had kept me incapacitated for three months. I saw that the disease associated with my childhood had not, in fact, belonged to me. The symptoms that had appeared to my mother had been only false suggestions that life was in matter; they had had nothing to do with my life, nor had they ever touched real consciousness. God is the only Life, and His child always abides with Him, expressing perfect health.

Separating the erroneous thinking from my mother in this way filled me with the most compassionate gentleness and tenderness toward her. I saw that this was what it meant really to love, that this was a truly loving and forgiving state of consciousness. I felt utterly peaceful; all sense of physicality was silent. I don't know how long this inspiring experience lasted, but that was the end of the back, hip, and leg pain. When I awoke in the morning, it was gone.
