Safe in His Arms

At times of depression perhaps we feel we don't really understand God and can't feel His love. But even if we think we don't understand God, He forever understands us.

Our true being, inseparable from Love, is His beloved spiritual reflection. Just as surely as we know that although the sky is gray the sun is still shining above the clouds and will shine again where we can perceive it, so we may know that God's love for us continues. He can surely make this love tangible and real to us in our human experience.

During a time of deep emotional depression a student of Christian Science went for an early evening walk on a beach. A severe storm had passed through earlier in the day, and the sea and sky were dull and gray. The Christian Scientist had been struggling for weeks with a feeling of hopelessness. Even the sound of birds singing to each other had seemed to increase her despair and the feeling that she was left out of such happiness. But now, while she walked along, she suddenly saw shafts of pink light touching a distant lighthouse, a church steeple, and a window, which glowed brilliantly in the momentary breakthrough of a setting sun. The cloud cover returned, but the student had glimpsed a symbol of promise in this warm light. She felt the healing of sorrow beginning in her consciousness.
