A Change of Heart

The Psalmist says, "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart." Ps. 73:26; What a vast improvement would occur in mankind's health and longevity if this citation were taken seriously!

Current beliefs link heart disease with both physical and psychosomatic causes. Bad effects are supposed to come from faulty diet, too much or too little exercise, stress, emotional factors, and so on ad infinitum. But Christian Science insists that the basic cause of this widespread problem is a material sense of life. People wear themselves out through spiritual starvation. The effective remedy, then, is to bring about a change of heart, a spiritual renewal.

Mrs. Eddy states, "We do believe, and understand—which is more—that there must be a change from human affections, desires, and aims, to the divine standard, 'Be ye therefore perfect;' also, that there must be a change from the belief that the heart is matter and sustains life, to the understanding that God is our Life, that we exist in Mind, live thereby, and have being." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 50;
