Several years after the Second World War, I found myself one day on the verge of complete collapse. I was physically ill and mentally upset and had lost my home. I suffered from several illnesses at the same time—pernicious anemia, fallen stomach, Graves' disease (exophthalmic goiter), and continually recurring suppurating tonsillitis, to name only a few. Due to an internal hemorrhage I was taken to a hospital.

After my discharge from the hospital I had to find a new place of employment. However, my condition worsened to the extent that I had no other wish than not to wake up again the next morning. The owner of the building in which the office was located where I was employed was a Christian Scientist. This high-minded woman discerned my condition immediately and took a loving interest in me. She did not rest until I had obtained the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and looked up a Christian Science practitioner. True, some time elapsed before I was ready for this.

The practitioner spoke very lovingly and comfortingly to me and gave me prayerful treatment. When I opened Science and Health, it interested me so deeply that I read it several hours each day. I literally devoured the contents. After only a few days I felt an inner peace such as I had not known for a long time. Then one illness after another disappeared, and not one of them has returned. I felt as if I had suddenly been lifted out of hell into heaven.
