RADIO PROGRAM NO. 436 — Restoring Genuine Neighborliness

[The participants are Harvey Wood and Howard Hunter.]

Hunter: I have lived in the inner city, in small towns, and in suburbs. But regardless of where I've lived, when neighbors disagree with one another or an issue polarizes opinion, a warm and friendly neighborhood can quickly change to a very unfriendly and unhappy place. People don't want to live in a tense and divided neighborhood. They would like to do something to improve the situation.

Wood: Something can be done, but it requires more than wishful thinking, and it involves us. Perhaps it calls for the unusual measure of love and humanity indicated in a recommendation I read in a magazine article. It proposed that we might go to each neighbor within a distance of three houses of our own and ask one question: "What can I do to make my being your neighbor more pleasant?" This may sound like a rather unusual step to take, but it's certainly less drastic than hate or violence.
