RADIO PROGRAM NO. 415 - Let's Stop Labeling Young People

[The participants are Michael Thorneloe, who is a Christian Scientist, and Harlan Witham, who is not a Christian Scientist.]

Witham: Very often young people today are collectively labeled as rebellious, disrespectful, or even delinquent. Parents too can be tempted to label them in these ways. Such wholesale labeling doesn't do justice either to parents or young people, and yet there is no question that some thirteen-and fourteen-year-olds, for example, do have very serious problems of rebellion, drugs, and delinquency. Still, it's not fair to label all young people in this way.

Thorneloe: It's not fair to label any young people in this way, because it can never be right to stereotype anyone. A parent can realize that he needn't label and that he can become more aware of the young person's real identity and individuality.
