As a young girl I was raised in a Christian home by devout parents. A beloved aunt living nearby was a dedicated Christian Scientist. In observing her I marveled that one could have such dominion and be so consistently happy. Later, when I was a young woman, I met two other students of Christian Science, a co-worker and a neighbor who also expressed these same qualities and practiced the teachings of Christian Science faithfully.
Some years later when the fear of polio was sweeping the country, our five-year-old daughter was stricken. Early medical treatment by specialists failed to heal her, and she was left with a twisted leg. It was then that I reached out for Truth, believing that if God is Love, He could not possibly sanction such a predicament for this beautiful child. Christian Science treatment was asked of a dedicated practitioner. Within a week the leg was perfectly normal, and the child had not even a trace of a limp. It was becoming clear to me, and happily so, that our human needs are not dependent upon material knowledge but are supplied by an all-powerful God, an ever-present help. The truth of Mrs. Eddy's words (Science and Health, p. 231) "What God cannot do, man need not attempt" satisfied me.
During the ensuing years our family has had manifold proofs of the therapeutic effects of Christian Science, as well as its preventive benefits. One instance of another healing was that of a broken leg sustained by another daughter six years of age. Again prayerful treatment was given by a practitioner. As I cut away the child's leotards, we talked of God's unfailing love for His children and of our unbroken relationship to Him. I felt an adjustment take place in the leg, although I did not associate it at the time with the metaphysical treatment sought only moments before. Two days later the child was able to walk about carefully, and the following day walked a quarter of a mile to the school bus.
