The first real impact of Christian Science on my life occurred...
The first real impact of Christian Science on my life occurred when I was a young teen-ager. I was bedridden with a severe case of influenza. The warm, healing influx of divine Love expressed through the faith and understanding of my mother was immediately effective in dissipating the tenacious grip of this sickness, and I was well. In subsequent years, the training I received in the Christian Science Sunday School enabled me to acquire some knowledge of this healing Principle.
The fact that this Science enhances one's abilities was demonstrated to me while I was a senior in high school. I entered an oratorical contest, which was given before the entire student body. Much to my surprise, I won. Since I had never participated in high school speech activity prior to this, I had good reason to be surprised. The competition was continued in the local churches, and a final contest was to be held for the citywide championship.
As this competition progressed, it became obvious that I must make use of my understanding of Christian Science in order to do my best as a participant. Self-assurance was maintained through confidence that the divine Mind directs all right activity. I was tempted to feel inferior and incapable of meeting the stronger competition. My scholastic interest and activities did not seem to match the requirements for this type of contest. One of the competitors was an outstanding student. But with the help of a Christian Science practitioner I made every effort to realize the truth of Mrs. Eddy's words in Science and Health (p. 477): "Man is the expression of Soul" and "Soul can never reflect anything inferior to Spirit." My final presentation was given with a great sense of freedom from self-consciousness and no anxiety as to who would win or lose. When it was announced by the judges that I was the winner, I was overjoyed. I knew that it had been a demonstration of poise and assurance gained through spiritual knowing.
