Years ago I turned to God in prayer for help

Years ago I turned to God in prayer for help. I was filled with despair and saw no way out of human misery, sickness, and the martyrdom of an unhappy marriage. I had a fervent longing to become acquainted with God and to have Him show me a way out of this distress.

Then one day, apparently inadvertently, a Herald of Christian Science (German Edition) was left at our place of business, the mailbox being accessible from the street. This Herald brought me the light of Truth in the darkest hour of my life. In reading it I gained the inspiration that God is in the midst of us, "a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). God's presence liberates, uplifts, prevails. This became to me a powerful, overwhelming fact. My innermost being was so affected that I knew this teaching of Christian Science to be the Comforter. In the Herald I found the address of a Christian Science Reading Room. There I was handed the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

The study I eagerly undertook was a blessed time. The light of Truth poured in so overwhelmingly that I often had to pause in the reading. And happy as a child, I read (Science and Health, p. 63): "In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry."
