What the Gambler Risks

Everyone who gambles risks something, whether it is a penny or a thousand dollars. This much is obvious. But not so obvious is the jeopardy in which the gambler places his most intimate and precious well-being and happiness when he flouts the law that rules the universe and toys with the belief that chance can bring him gain.

Christ Jesus said, "What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" Mark 8:36; The risk that every gambler takes when he tosses a coin, spins a wheel, or even when he buys a ticket in a lottery is that he will lose his God-given consciousness of the operation of divine law and suffer as a consequence.

Christian Science reveals that God, the Father, the creator of all that really exists, is divine Principle. His universe and man include His qualities. Each individual is complete and satisfied, governed by unvarying law. The divine law of God maintains perfect order in the heaven of spiritual reality. Nothing can happen there by accident. This law ensures that neither luck nor chance can influence man either for good or ill. Each individual idea created by God is always safe. Not one can lose or gain a single thing. His completeness is eternally assured, and his harmony forever intact.
