My mother raised me in Christian Science. I am very grateful for this and for all her patience and understanding. I did not turn from Christian Science to other means for healing, but in my late teens and early twenties I did think it very smart to drink and smoke.
After I was married and we were expecting our first child, I had quite a bit of bleeding during the seventh month and was told by the doctor who was to deliver the child that a cesarean section would be performed in the morning. During this time I was receiving treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. A cesarean section was not performed the next day. Instead, X rays showed everything holding in the right place, and I was allowed to go home. Once when this condition reappeared, the words of Mrs. Eddy's hymn entitled "Love" filled my thought (Poems, p. 7):
