The preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God (I Cor. 1:18)

Phillips translates, "The preaching of the cross is, I know, nonsense to those who are involved in this dying world, but to us who are being saved from that death it is nothing less than the power of God"; while Moffatt gives a somewhat similar rendering: "Those who are doomed to perish find the story of the cross 'sheer folly,' but it means the power of God for those whom he saves."

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit (Ps. 51:12)
