Be Inspired!

It is wise not to fall into the habit of taking the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, for granted. Nor is it wise to let the reading of the precious truths for which she labored become a dull ritual. We need to reach eagerly for inspiration rather than just get this or that many pages read.

In the story of Christ Jesus' visit to the home of Lazarus, the sisters Mary and Martha give a vivid comparison of two approaches to the Master's presence, two ways of preparing for the inspiration of Truth. Martha honored the guest by spending her time fulfilling household dudes. Mary chose "that good part" Luke 10:42; and honored the guest by sitting at his feet and listening.

As students of Christ, Truth, we may be tempted to rest only when we have carried out the letter of dutiful service without giving equal attention to the inner hunger for inspiration that is not encumbered by any outward show of material activity. To gain even a glimpse of the Christ, the divine nature of man as the son of God, is the needful part of any Bible-related reading we do. Like Mary, we must put first the listening that gives us inspiration.
