Drop Off the Swaddling Clothes!
In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes: "Eternal Truth is changing the universe. As mortals drop off their mental swaddling-clothes, thought expands into expression." Science and Health, p. 255; This change can be seen in many aspects of human living.
It was once the custom to wind narrow lengths of bandage around the limbs of the newborn infant to prevent movement. This was prompted by a desire to cherish and protect the child. But as human thought has responded to Truth and has reached out for greater freedom, the procedure has changed. No longer is the baby restricted in this way. He is given lighter clothing and is free to move and kick his legs.
A similar change can be seen in the greater freedom of expression allowed young children in school. Instead of being compelled to sit still and be quiet, they are now encouraged to move around, to explore, to experiment, to ask and discuss questions.
