I was led to take up the study of Christian Science as a young girl, following eight years of treatment by several physicians that brought no relief from a complication of physical disorders diagnosed as colitis, neuritis, and phlebitis, following an appendectomy. An instantaneous healing of the neuritis was proof to me that this religion, which was brought into our home by a relative, was what I wanted and needed. I dropped all medical help, with the reluctant consent of the rest of my family, and began the serious study of Christian Science. The healing of the other physical disorders came somewhat later after a period of great spiritual growth.
During this time I was led by a Christian Science practitioner to the realization of two very valuable lessons. One was the necessity for putting first things (spiritual study and pursuits) first in my life. Thus with more consistent prayerful study came the opportunity for dedicated service in a branch church. The other lesson I needed to learn was to release myself from the mistaken sense of responsibility that I must prove to the rest of my immediate family and to the community in which I lived that this religion could heal. I came to see that I had only to learn to understand God and my relation to Him, and that this enlightenment would then permeate not only my own thought and bring peace but would quiet the opposition and fear of others as well. This period of spiritual growth was followed by a complete healing.
I have been free from periodic colds for the past eight years. When I began my duties nine years ago as a professor at a large university, I was immediately assailed with an attack of cold and influenza, which was then rampant among the student body. As a graduate student on this same campus several years before, I had found these ills regularly recurring and disrupting normal activity. Since my acceptance of a campus situation as a permanent way of life had come after much prayerful thought, I was roused to realize that, as a Christian Scientist, I need not tolerate such periodic disruption. I gave special prayerful attention to the need to keep my own thought free from false, contagious beliefs. By this study and contemplation I was healed and have been free from the common cold and from influenza since that time.
