The Story of Billy Parrot
[For children]
I am going to tell you a true story about the Joybell family who for some time had wanted to have a talking bird. After many months a gray parrot with a red tail came to live with them.
"I'm Billy Parrot," he said in a squawky sort of voice. "You're a cuckoo, you are," he added. He was tame and friendly and cheerful, and he quickly became one of the family. Every day Mr. and Mrs. Joybell laughed at all the funny things he said.
One morning Bill spread his wings and flew away from the family who loved him so much. Because he used to be a wild bird, he thought it would be fun to try flying over the treetops. But when he had flown a little way, he became lost and did not know how to find his way home again.
