During World War II, I attempted to enlist in the United States...

During World War II, I attempted to enlist in the United States Army but was rejected because of a hernia. Since I was a student of Christian Science, I decided to apply the truths I had learned in the Christian Science Sunday School rather than resort to surgery.

I prayed to know that I was a perfect child of God and that my being was intact. Later I was called to have another examination but did not pass because the hernia was still present. After this the thought came to me to go back in my thinking and eradicate the false picture of having hurt myself as a young boy. In other words, I denied that an accident causing a hernia had ever happened to me. Then one day as I was running up a flight of stairs in the gymnasium of the university I was attending, I realized that I was free of pain. A short time later I was accepted into the Army.

The healing was not entirely complete, however. After finishing basic training we were to have a physical examination before being sent on for further training. While I was marching with full pack to the dispensary for the exam, doubtful mortal thought suggested to me that I might not pass. This fear expressed itself physically in such severe pain that I either had to drop out of ranks or heal myself right on the spot. I prayed with conviction only one thing: ''I am perfect now." There was an instantaneous demonstration that "the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword" (Hebr. 4:12). The pain left immediately. I passed the physical exam that day and subsequent Army and life insurance physical examinations.
