The Log Jam

We have all seen pictures showing a river choked with logs destined for some lumberyard or paper mill. Many times this mass of timber is prevented from moving downstream by a single key log wedged against a rock in such a way as to hold back thousands of other logs, thus hindering them from fulfilling their useful purpose.

In seeking the solution to a problem of disease or discord the student of Christian Science may find the above illustration helpful. For instance, a painful bodily condition may persist despite one's earnest efforts to see that any kind of material sensation is devoid of presence or power because of the allness and ever-presence of God, Spirit. This basic teaching of Christian Science, so clearly set forth in the writings of Mrs. Eddy, stems from her recognition that a perfect creator, knowing and constituting only good, is incapable of creating or cognizing a universe in which is to be found a single element unlike His own nature. Seeing man as the perfect effect of a perfect cause, Mrs. Eddy was able to heal after the manner of Christ Jesus and to establish her healing work on a spiritually scientific basis so that others might achieve the same practical results.

If, after the student has done prayerful metaphysical work along these lines, the condition does not yield, perhaps there is a key log that calls for specific treatment in order to bring to light the fundamental truth of man's immunity to disease and discomfort. One might ask: Am I trying to convert sick matter into well matter? Am I dealing with a material body manifesting discord instead of seeing that man possesses only a spiritual identity in the likeness of his Maker? Am I failing to express that tender, Christly love which is fundamental and essential to the spiritually mental healing art?
