Being often reminded that I had been an unwanted child, I grew...

Being often reminded that I had been an unwanted child, I grew up with a sense of no one's ever being on my side. Doctors said I had been born with what they described as symptoms of premature aging. Some years later after being examined at a famous medical center in New England, I was shown a page listing incurable ailments, some of which were to develop later if I survived the first ones.

Although poor health seemed to block everything I endeavored to do, the generally accepted beliefs regarding God, man, and the universe bothered me even more. I would get up around two or three in the morning and write and write, trying to find a solution. I prayed each night not to live another day. Shortly after being examined at the hospital, I was led to the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

No one who has not had the experience of a life of suffering and torment can really appreciate what the book meant to me. At first I did not read for the purpose of seeking healing, but the healings surely came. I was healed of chronic headaches, vomiting and fainting spells, liver and bladder trouble, tics from Saint Vitus's dance, gallstones, allergies, and so forth. But the most wonderful thing seemed to be that the book had been written and that everything had already been taken care of in these writings. My part was to help establish the teachings in my thought.
