One evening while doing some remodeling on my basement stairs, I stepped backward off the landing, falling on my back on the basement floor some six feet below. Physical sense told me immediately that something was wrong with my ribs but, just as immediately, I turned to God as the only source of power.

I repeated "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy very quickly. Then I proceeded to go over it again, slowly, thinking about each fact to realize the truth of man as God's image and likeness. The statement concludes with these words: "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual." The pain appeared to be intense until I grasped, with conviction, the idea that the true man is really spiritual and cannot experience pain.

In five minutes I was able to rise and pick up my tools. The following morning, because the pain had returned, I appeared to require greater clarification of the spirituality of man. I stayed home from the office to read and study the Bible and Science and Health more thoroughly. By the end of the day all trace of the fall had vanished. I found I was able to release myself fully into God's hands and absolve myself of all responsibility.
