I have had the blessings of the teaching of Christian Science all my life. I have found the truth as set forth in the Bible adequate to meet every problem when earnestly applied according to the rules set forth in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Through the practice of its teachings I have enjoyed good health, have been led into interesting, challenging, and rewarding paths, and have had my life enriched in many ways.

While I was employed in a foreign country, a hernia condition that had existed for many years was aggravated to such an extent that I was unable to work. I could not retain food and spent most of my time in bed. There was a feeling of self-condemnation because specific prayerful work had not been done to take care of the situation earlier. There were no Christian Science practitioners in the immediate area, and I asked for help from the wife of an Army officer stationed there. Both she and her husband were class-taught students of Christian Science. She lovingly consented to pray and work with me, and I was taken into their home.

There was no great improvement for several days, although we both worked diligently as taught in Christian Science. After a particularly difficult night, when we all clung tenaciously to the truth that God is man's Life, I was reminded that I didn't have to believe all the material evidence that was being presented. That statement aroused me, and from then on improvement was steady and sure. I suddenly awoke to the fact that no material testimony could enter my consciousness without my consent, and I made a great effort to refuse admission to anything but angel messages. Mrs. Eddy defines "angels" on page 581 in the textbook: "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality." I could see that the aggressive mental suggestion trying to envelop me was entirely apart from my true self, and I gained a wonderful sense of the infinitude of God, Love, Life.
