Christian Science Church Center

PROGRESS REPORT No. 17

The sense of unity underscoring the design of the Church Center is graciously illustrated in the role given to the reflecting pool. Extending more than 200 yards in length, the pool's bright water will mirror all of the structures—new buildings and existing ones—in rich visual unity. And, in so doing, the pool will give a sense of intimacy while still preserving a large open expanse.

A walkway will encircle the pool, thus enabling strollers—not to mention camera fans—to locate a reflected image of any one of the buildings. From any position along the Huntington Avenue side of the pool one will be able to see an image of the original edifice of The Mother Church. And from the curved front of the new Sunday School one will command a striking view of the pool, including a full image of the tall, 26-story Administration Building.

Combined with this design for beauty is the architectural plan for the pool's utility. Some three-quarters of a million gallons of water, circulating at a rate of 2,000 gallons a minute will cool the Colonnade Building thus eliminating the need for a 600-ton cooling facility on top of the building. The result will be simplification of the engineering challenges for the foundation and the assurance of a cleaner, more attractive roof line.
