I wish to relate a healing of my little girl when I was first a student of Christian Science. Three days after she was born, it was diagnosed that in addition to congenital dislocation of the hips she had contracted spinal meningitis and a mouth and throat infection called thrush. A board of nine doctors was called in, and we were told that she did not have a chance to live and might not survive the night. We contacted a Christian Science practitioner, who immediately began to treat the baby through scientific prayer. Within an hour the doctor phoned and said our daughter was much better.

Through the help of the practitioner and our own prayerful study of the Bible and the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and other Christian Science literature, we were told in less than three weeks that our child was going to live and that she had made medical history because they had not known of a baby with meningitis at such a young age to survive. Later two of the head medical men who were involved with our daughter's case made the statement several times that the healing came from a higher power.

The practitioner gave me a verse from John Greenleaf Whittier's hymn to study (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 49):
