The Kingdom of Heaven Within

The Gospel of Matthew records that, prior to the ministry of Christ Jesus, John the Baptist came preaching repentance and the kingdom of heaven at hand (see 3:1, 2). And throughout the Christian Scriptures the spiritual character of this heavenly kingdom is indicated. This kingdom clearly relates to the unseen and the eternal. It belongs to our inner life, or spiritualized consciousness.

To the Pharisees who demanded when the kingdom of God should come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you." Luke 17:20,21; These words surely imply that this blessed kingdom is without physical location or a mortal sense of time. It exists solely as a state of glorified consciousness—a holy and continuous knowing of but one reality, of immaculate, divine Being, cause embracing effect.

In one of her shorter writings Mrs. Eddy makes this significant and enlightening statement: "Soul is the only real consciousness which cognizes being." Rudimental Divine Science, p. 5; And as we recognize ourselves as the expression of Soul, we become aware of a present and enduring perfection and satisfaction, of that kingdom of heaven within which is the gift of God, hence as continuously available as God Himself.
