Power for Today

In the Lord's Prayer we do not pray, "Give us this year our yearly bread"; nor even, "Give us this month our monthly bread." Christ Jesus, whose love for mankind was shown to be practical by his deeds, taught us to ask for today's bread, not tomorrow's. He said, "Give us this day our daily bread." Matt. 6:11; And Mrs. Eddy, interpreting the petition spiritually in Science and Health, retains the same emphasis: "Give us grace for to-day." Science and Health, p. 17;

Elsewhere in the Bible, as well as in Mrs. Eddy's writings, the focus is on today. "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings," p. vii; writes Mrs. Eddy in the Preface to Science and Health.

Why is today so important that we must link it with our highest concept of Truth and Love? It would be reasonable to expect that in bowing before the vast and sublime Mind that inhabits eternity we should be led to look on today as insignificant; yet the exact opposite is the case. In praying as Jesus taught, we seek power of today's living, not escape from life. We ask wisdom for today's decisions, strength to defeat today's temptations, peace that will rout today's turmoil.
