FORGIVENESS

Winifred Fields Walters

"Lovest thou me?"
The son of Jonas grieved
when questioned by his Lord
once, twice, three times.

Had he so soon forgot
that woeful, chill-struck night
when he denied the Christ
once, twice, three times?

Christ, Truth, requires fidelity
from every heart it wakes.
Obedience to Love's demand
corrects our past mistakes.
