Expanding Consciousness

Human consciousness can expand. Anyone who has been healed through Christian Science knows that this experience brought him an expanded sense of mind. A measure of spiritualization has made this expansion possible. The human consciousness, however active it has been in material fields of learning and experience, is always held in limits because of the mortal element in it. The physical senses constitute this limiting element, and until they are seen as false and as no part of God's man, His image, mankind will continue to be bounded by their narrow horizons. People will continue to believe that they live in matter and that they must someday die out of it.

A careful study of the life of Christ Jesus shows that he was constantly breaking through the bounds of the material senses, restoring health to sufferers and self-respect to sinners. He called God Father and Spirit, and he gave those he healed a glimpse of their real life in Spirit—a life of freedom quite apart from flesh and the mortal senses. He said of those who would accept his leadership, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10;

Christian Science follows Jesus closely in its intent and ability to expand the sense of life correctly and in this way prove that man lives in Spirit and that his conscious capacities are forever developing. Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "When we realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor of matter, this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness." Science and Health, p. 264;
