My introduction to Christian Science about fifty-five years ago...

My introduction to Christian Science about fifty-five years ago came to me in the following manner. I was a very young, happily married woman with two small children and was living in an apartment house in New York City. I was attracted to a neighbor, a mother with six children, who expressed much joy and neighborly interest whenever we met. One day I took courage to ask her what she had that I wanted. Her answer was, "Christian Science." I had never heard of it. I found myself knocking daily at her door to learn more about its teaching. I began to study Science and Health and other writings of Mrs. Eddy and to attend Christian Science services. Before long my husband accompanied me to church and lectures, and our daughters attended Christian Science Sunday School.

I should like to share a wonderful proof of God's guidance. About thirty-three years ago the university where my husband was employed was going through a difficult financial experience. Salaries were greatly reduced, making it necessary for us to increase our income in other ways. Whatever human footsteps I took did not materialize. It was then that I turned to prayer, asking God for guidance.

During the week when the subject of the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly was "Mind," I studied it faithfully the entire week, often staying with my books way into the night. One particular night the statement from Science and Health (p. 199), "The devotion of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible," was uppermost in my thinking. By daylight an idea for an activity which would be of benefit to the university as well as to us came to me so strongly that I knew my prayers were answered.
