Several years ago I was living and working in Chile

Several years ago I was living and working in Chile. I had been sent as a State Department grantee to South America to teach in a small school on the outskirts of Santiago. In the process of getting acquainted with a new city, I of course lost no time in seeking out the Christian Science Reading Room; and I was made to feel very much at home. I arrived in July and was told that there would be a Christian Science lecture in October.

Several days before the lecture a growth appeared inside my mouth. Eating, smiling, and even speaking caused me much discomfort. When teaching English as a foreign language to children it is necessary to enunciate and express ideas clearly. On account of the swelling in my jaw and cheek I was having difficulty carrying on my work at school. The children were asking what was wrong, and several fellow teachers were kindly offering material remedies. The condition did not improve even though I faithfully studied the Lesson-Sermon, provided in the Christian Science Quarterly, and tried to realize the perfection of man as the expression of God, Spirit.

The lecture was to be given in a large hotel in Santiago. I arrived early, looking forward to an hour of spoken English on the most beautiful subject in the world, Christian Science.
