As a child, I had been considered delicate in health and had been under the care of doctors much of the time, but I still was not well. My parents took up the study of Christian Science in 1910 and enrolled five of us children in the Sunday School, where the truths of spiritual being were taught us. Many healings took place in our family.
Years later, after I was married and had two little girls, one morning just after breakfast, when my husband had gone to our business, I felt an alarming sensation in my body. I read the lesson aloud from the Bible and Science and Health as outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly, as was my habit each morning. I got the older child ready for school, then sent her with a note to a Christian Scientist two blocks away, asking for help.
Very soon the sensation stopped, but I was in much distress. When my husband came home, he helped me lie down, but I could not stand the pain. I spent days and nights sitting up in a large chair, and at times I was in an unconscious state.
