I have been reared in Christian Science and am grateful that my parents have never allowed me to take my religion for granted but instead have actively shown that Christian Science must always be appreciated and acknowledged for what it is, a religion that can meet all our human needs.

Three years ago during my first year in college, as is often the case for freshmen girls, I was given the rush the first month by the upper-class boys on campus. Although studying daily the Bible Lesson and attending Christian Science college organization meetings and Sunday School, I was evidently not alert and found myself accepting dates with many different boys just because I was interested in having an exciting, busy, and fun schedule. This obviously was not a good motive.

One Friday night my date thought to surprise me by coming by to pick me up on his friend's motorcycle. Not wanting to appear unsophisticated, I agreed to ride on it. During the course of our ride I sensed something was wrong and questioned my date. He told me laughingly that this particular motorcycle had no brakes and in order to stop he had to downshift the vehicle and then drag his feet. By reciting various citations from the Bible and from Science and Health that I had memorized as a Sunday School pupil, I immediately tried to erase all the mortal mind suggestions that suddenly appeared in my thought.
