A College Student Writes

What Is Man?

On college campuses many different aspects of man are being considered in an attempt to answer the questions, What is man? and What is his place in the universe? College is a time of questioning social and religious institutions and a time of searching for new ones. Many college students, disappointed with the religion in which they were reared, are searching for a new religion or philosophy which they can apply successfully in their daily lives. For many students Christian Science has been found to be the answer to their needs.

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy defines man as, "The compound idea of infinite Spirit; the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind."Science and Health, p. 591; This Science starts from a premise that is drastically different from that used in the material sciences. It declares that the real man is spiritual, never limited to a physical body. The material body is not real or lasting, but rather is an illusion formed by mortal belief. Since man in reality is spiritual, not physical, he is incapable of being sick or of dying.

This knowledge of man's true being is not simply theory, because it can be proven by demonstration. When one understands the truths taught in Christian Science, he can overcome any evil that mortal mind, alias the devil, can conjure up. Christ Jesus, the man who practiced what he preached more than any other man, says, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." John 14:12.
