It was with much joy that I saw Christian Science heal a mental illness. My mother became deeply despondent, uninterested, and inactive physically and mentally. As her closest relative, I became her guardian, and at about the same time she entered a nursing home for Christian Scientists.

Shortly afterward I engaged a Christian Science practitioner to help her. I talked with the practitioner each day myself, and she voiced many truths to sustain me at times when I was frightened. She encouraged me to hold to Mrs. Eddy's words in Pulpit and Press (p. 3), "Know, then, that you possess sovereign power to think and act rightly, and that nothing can dispossess you of this heritage and trespass on Love."

At different times the illness manifested itself as fear, hatred, a refusal to speak, abusiveness, belligerence, and hallucinations. Nevertheless the practitioner and I continued to pray and be steadfast in Truth. The practitioner assured me that each and every scientific prayer is effective.
