I should like to relate a healing which took many weeks but was truly a purifying and uplifting experience.
The difficulty was extreme pain in and paralysis of the right thigh and leg. Sleep was impossible for many days and nights. A Christian Science practitioner was asked to give me treatment. We worked together. He asked me whether I was beholding a suffering, human mortal or God's perfect, spiritual man made in the image and likeness of God. And both of us acknowledged the perfect spiritual selfhood, the only true man, not a suffering mortal needing anything; that man already has all that God has as His reflection; that God is All and gives all good to His beloved children.
I learned that I must surrender all personal sense of self, a belief of the flesh, and listen for God's direction. On page 15 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy gives specific musts for praying correctly. She states: "In order to pray aright, we must enter into the closet and shut the door. We must close the lips and silence the material senses. In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sin and plead God's allness. We must resolve to take up the cross, and go forth with honest hearts to work and watch for wisdom, Truth, and Love. We must 'pray without ceasing.' " I saw that I must obey these demands to obtain a right result. My desired result was healing for the glorification of God.
When I was unable to sleep night or day, the following enlightening thought was very helpful: "The consciousness of Truth rests us more than hours of repose in unconsciousness" (Science and Health, p. 218). I just knew that it is Truth that destroys error, remembering the Bible words, "The battle is not yours, but God's" (II Chron. 20:15). My part was to turn from mortal mind and listen to the divine Mind, which uplifts, inspires, and heals us. I could truly declare that spiritual man, the only real man, is never sick or in pain because he is God's image and likeness, reflecting health and harmony every moment.
I am very grateful for the Way-shower, Christ Jesus, for Mrs. Eddy, who has given us this demonstrable truth, Christian Science, and for the inspiring practitioner who was so helpful in bringing about my healing, which was eventually complete. I am humbly grateful to be a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church and to have had class instruction.
